This is a question that we get often. Some homeowners are surprised that they show painters their used paint they have at home (even from just a few years ago) and when they open the paint cans their shape or smell show signs of decay. For some this is a surprise. At that point, when they realize one paint can is not in good shape anymore, most likely the rest of cans follow the same condition.

Fortunately, paint may stay in good shape for years (at least for quite a few), if some of the following steps are followed:

  • Paint cans need to be sealed well, after use. Make sure lid does not get spoiled, when trying to open the can use a proper tool opener. Sometimes even trying to close the lid with much strength can deteriorate the can lid and cause the air to filter, which is one main cause of paint decay. Try not to use a heavy hammer but perhaps a soft hammer or a tool with a soft but firm end.
  • Try to avoid using the garage or shed as a storage as the temperature in these places is not as regulated, or proper as the inside of the house. Try to keep paint at an approximate room temperature perhaps in the basement, attic (well ventilated), interior storage, a closet, etc.
  • Consider getting plastic containers so that if paint lids or the entire can are not in good shape anymore, you can use new recipients to store your paint safely.
  • Make sure paint is generally clean from any foreign residuals or small particles that may cause future odors or decay in the paint. Use a mesh or screen to filter the paint and keep it clean if needed.
  • Keep cans organize and not piling up on top of each other. If cans fall or are hit, it may cause the can sides or lid to get damaged.

Following some basic directions may help you preserve the paint that you have at your house. That way you can save time and money when you have your house painted or touched up or if you DIY.

  • Sometimes painters end up buying ¼ of paint just to do a minor touch-up. You would not need to pay for that paint if your old paint is in good condition.
  • Sometimes some painters or paint stores struggle to get a close color match, by having your old paint in good condition may help save time and hassle for everyone. Sometimes paint stores do not have that particular color base to mix your color, and they end up even offering you an entire gallon because their products at times even more expensive, can match your specific color base.

Finally, when you have your house painted by professional painters, for the most part, they will make sure to close cans properly, but just in case a reminder to them that you are interested in this task to be done very well, may serve a long way and ensure you made all steps you could to preserve your paint.
